Factory Houses Garswood

Can anyone tell me where the Factory Houses where in Garswood please?

I was born in Garswood & never heard of the Factory Houses,Have you any more information?

Factory houses were actually in Downall Green, near Spindle Hillock.

These houses were also known as the Barrock Houses. The couple in the first photo were Vincent and Cecelia Rotheram who lived around the corner near Gothic Cottage.

Your right about them being call the Barrock Houses but I was referring to them as on the map, the other photo is of Mrs Dunn and her mother out of Rectory Road

P,S,Greener do you remember the houses or have you been told about them

dodger/tumtingle--Just been told by my sister in New Zealand the area was called the Barracks that's why the houses got the name Barrack houses,the street was called Pig Street she didn't say if it were the old name for part of Downall Green Road or a road off.

I know myself in the 40s the now Downall Green Road changed names a few times coming from Bryn before it got to Downall Green

Interesting to see your comment on the changing name of Downall Green Road, my mum's aunt was born at 323, Downall Green Road in 1912, but had in brackets....Factory Houses.

I forgot to add, on the 1911 census, it is called Factory Houses.

I've been talking with Miss Cunliffe(The school teacher) about old Downall Green it was a very interesting talk, example the brow going down to the the houses was called Gaskills Brow after her family,the one on the other side going to the church was named Willcocks Brow,after the owner of Old House Farm that was at the top where that newish house stands now, it only got called Cunliffes Brow after Willcocks farm went

Gaskells Brow is just out of shot on the map I posted Dougie, you can just see part of the name above Highfield house.

Dougie, where was 'Old House Farm'? I thought Wilcocks farm was on the way up to Windy Arbour, not near the brow... I am confused and I don't need any wisecracks from anyone either...

janet--been waiting for you to pop up we were at the crem over Christmas after the service I went back in with my camera to see if your brother was on duty but he was on holiday, so I couldn't take a photo of us to upload here are you would be looking at it now

I don't remember the farm either but it was across the road from Cunliffes farm before they built the council house, do you remember Miss Cunliffe she will be about 96 now but still as sound as a pound and very nice to talk with

Thanks for that dodger, my uncle Jack Parkinson was listed as residing there on his baptism records from holy trinity, his father was John Parkinson and from there they moved to what was known as the dolly tub row , Eaton cottages.

I didn't know about a farm across from the Cunliffe farm,, was that Wilcox farm family related to the Wilcox farm family on the way up to Windy Arbour do you know? I feel better now I know that you didn't remember the farm, I was beginning to think I was losing my mind

Yes they would have been related in some way my grandmother was a wilcock before she married they lived in the Blue Bell Cottages I bet you don't remember them I do ,

My Mam & Dad lived in Old House Farm cottage attached to the farm and bought their first three children up there till they moved to the newly built council houses in 1936,

Hi Dougie....Happy New Year. When were the Council Houses built opposite Cunliffs Farm. Also, who were the owners of the 2 farms at the top of the Hillock in Brocstedes Road, one farm was opposite Brocstedes Cottages, and the other was on the bend 100 yards further on. In the 1940s/50s, I think this farm was owned by the Hodgkinson family, who were relatives of mine.

Thanks Robin, same to you not sure really on the date but sister was born in the farm cottage and my brother in the Council house in 1937 thats why I put 1936,
the first farm Cunliffes,then Johnsons, then Hokies, then Waddies,then Hokies again right in the fields by Bluebell Wood remember now

Dougie, at the top of the Brow, there is a newish detached house... Did there used to be cottages there years and years ago, set back a bit from the rd... I don't know if I remember them or am imagining them...

jouell....may I come in on this, as I lived across the road from the new house which was built in the 50s/60s on an area that had been the garden belonging to the left hand house of the pair that still stand at the top of the brow.

Yes thats the place where my mam and dad lived but you'll not remember them, as Robin said it was a garden belonging to the first house I thinks his name Jimmy Sudworth or something like that and next door was Wilcocks

In my head I have a vision of when coming up to the top of the brow from DG, the cottages were right there on that curve... The timeline says I couldn't have seen the cottages, yet I have this vision of them... Maybe I could have seen pictures, I don't know

Apparently the Barrack Houses got their name when Lord Gerrard had his own private army The Hussars this is we're some of the soldiers lived, hence Barracks.
Old House Farm stood on what is now the large gardens of the council houses at the top end of Coronation Street just as you go through the gennel.
And the new house that was built on the garden at the top off Booths Brow Road was built around 1980.It was built by a sandy haired chap who lived further round Booths Brow Road.
When Cunliffe's retired in the 60's the farm was sold to Hokie's of Ryecroft Farm and they rented it to Vi Ashton's parents.
Booth Brow Farm is one of the oldest local farms dating back to the 1660's.

When was the reservoir filled in and why, anyone know thanks.

massumbula---Good thread you've started here it's only a shame it couldn't have been called Ex-Downall Green (6) as Garwood is only a few hundred yards from DG,it will only get lost for ever when people stop posting,

BamBam started the DG thread 6 years ago but lets them get far too long before starting a new one, look at the history with names in Woodies post that COULD and WILL get lost as no one will be able to find it

It's not your fault it's that BamBam, by the way only the top Reservoir was filled in the bottom one is still there and get fished all the time

Yeah your right it should be on the Downall site. I think Massumbula is talking about the lake at Dam corner Dougie. This I think was filled in,in the 40's with local refuse.

Yes I can see it now on the map marked 252 only ever knew it to be called the Dam, I think it was made from the overflow from the bottom Reservoir and of the fields so it could feed the cornmill by the bridge,

woodie you either don't come from the area are your not very old if you only think the Dam was filled in with local waste

I remember the dam freezing over, me and Evelyn Hesketh went walking on it and I went through the ice... I'll never forget walking home, me wellies full of water and I got a good hiding when I got home

dodger-- Have you any idea of the date of the map as looking at it again it's not showing any houses after the Smithey on the right hand side of Rectory Road and none on the left hand side of Spindle Hillock upto the Corn Mill, as they looked like old house in the 40s when I was a lad

Pig Street .... was next to Holy Trinity church I think (there was a street and some houses which cut the corner)
not near Barracks houses.

Hi,, I currently live on Gaskells Brow and am interested to know the history of 436A its the big house on the left between the semis and the Greenhalches terrace if you are coming up the brow. (Greenhalches terrace ends at Dellside close). I'm told it was built for a local Doctor but I can't prove that also interested to know about the terrace the stone says 1894 and must predate the Doctors house by many years

The house was built for Doctor Fulton. At the time his practice was on Wigan Road next to Arnold Clark. (It was the The Star public house).
He was later joined by Doctor Burnett who carried on the practice after Doctor Fulton retired. When one of his neighbours got married Doctor Fulton paid for the honeymoon. She still lives there. I can't recall her surname but he first name is Jean.
The house was later bought by Bill Ratcliffe and,as far as I know,it is still owned by one of Bill's sons.
